Make an Impact!
Giving back and making an impact has always been important to me. As owner of Paw Joggers, I believe it is vital to give to both our animal and our human friends that share this world. It can be volunteering your time, donating money or providing for needs through donations and services.
Passionate about running, dogs and fundraising for important causes, I've somehow managed to tie them all together at this point in my life--it's a wonderful feeling!
This year, on Sunday, May 2nd, I will be running my 12th Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon.
Many who have supported me in the past know that I have run the last 11 marathons to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to help find a cure for blood-related cancers. This cause is still very near and dear to my heart. In October, 2008, news hit close to home when my son, Brandon Armbrust, was diagnosed with MS. It has now become my mission to help find a cure for both LLS and MS.
The Accelerated Cure Project for MS (ACP) has a local Cincinnati chapter that I recently joined in efforts to do what the name implies--accelerated cure! The basic mission of ACP is to find a cure through a systematic plan of research into the causes of MS--a "Cure Map". ACP's implementation of a MS Repository--projected to be the world's largest, shared collection of bio-samples ever assembled--is used in this research. To find out more about MS and ACP, please visit http://www.acceleratedcure.org/
For my new friends and cause supporters that have not received information on blood-related cancers, please visit http://www.lls.org/
Training has begun! Although you can train on your own for a marathon, running with others when mileage hits 10+ is much more pleasant AND motivating! I have run the past 11 "Pigs" with Team In Training--a fantastic organization! I joined a new training group called Miles That Matter (MTM), that allows runners to train for any charity, as well as multiple ones if you wish. Another great thing about MTM is that it was founded by my former Team In Training coach, Karen Cosgrove. To find out more about MTM, please visit http://www.milesthatmatter.com/
This year, my training and marathon run will honor Sondra Stewman (my Team In Training hero for the past 9 years), my son, Brandon Armbrust, and all those stricken with these diseases. I hope you will join in my efforts to help find a cure--no running required!
There are three ways to donate:
Donating through these websites is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts.
Every dollar counts and your willingness to spread the word to others will help too!
I will be updating my ACP fundraising page with pictures and videos, so please check back often!
Many thanks for your support and God bless!
Billie Mendoza

Giving Back to our Animal Friends
There are so many ways we can give to our animal friends. Since I have listed three ways to donate for human causes in "Making an Impact", I'm listing three ways to give back to our animal friends.
- A loving home!
The ultimate "give back" is a loving home! If you are a loving and responsible pet owner, kudos to you! If you want the unconditional love and joy that being a pet owner can bring, adopt or rescue a pet. If being a permanant pet owner isn't feasible, consider temporarily fostering a pet from an over-crowded shelter.
- Volunteering time and/or skills!
Other ways we can show our love is volunteering time at a local shelter, rescue or clinic. If only for a few hours a month, every animal will appreciate your efforts. Seeing the wags of tails, hearing the soft purrs or feeling sloppy wet kisses can turn even the worst day into a joyful one--for you AND the shelter animals!
Do you have technoology or organizational skills? How about talents in marketing or event planning? It's not just cleaning kennels, walking dogs and playing with kittys that keep a shelter running. The behind-the-scenes efforts that help these animals find good homes is critical. Check with a local animal shelter or rescue to find out if you can offer assistance.
- Donations!
Of course, every non-profit organization relies on donations of goods, services and money to remain open. All organizations will accept your monetary donations and nearly every shelter, rescue or clinic has a "wish list"--a list of items that are needed to help run the facility. These items can be anything from pet food to old towels to therapeutic beds for elderly or ill animals. If your local shelter does not have a list posted, ask them for one. Most have web sites with the information available at the click of a mouse.
Whatever way you choose to help will benefit all involved; the organization, the community, yourself and the animals.
The following is a list of some local animal organizations that can use your help:

Happy St. Paw Tricks Day!
Because we're all about paws, we're putting a little twist on this Irish holiday. So whether you have an Irish Wolfhound, an Australian Shepherd, a French Bulldog or an international mix (aka Mutt), we want you to celebrate this month by teaching your pet a new trick!
Even though you may not think your pet is "teachable", all dogs love to learn! It can be as simple as "Sit", "Down" or "Stay" if you've just started training. If you're past basic training, teach "Shake" or "Rollover". Now, if you have the superstar pet, then pick a really fun trick to teach...you know, the tricks you've seen performed on David Letterman! Ok, maybe not that outrageous! Teach your pet to fetch something for you, like the leash when you're ready for a walk.
The trick is to keep it simple, be consistent and have fun!
If your dog really has star quality--you taught him to pour green beer--then you need to audition for the Late Show's "Stupid Pet Tricks" and prove how smart your dog really is! Your chance to audition will be here in Cincinnati on Saturday, April 10th at the Everything Pets Expo. http://www.everythingpets.org/index.php?page=ShowSchedule&MONTH=2010-04#event_7_
Paw Joggers wants you to share your tricks with us! Please post a video or picture on our Facebook fan page or email us. Links are at the bottom of this newsletter.
Wishing you all lots of luck and a very happy "St. Paw Tricks Day"! ______________________________________________________
The Last Great Race on Earth!
Can one human and a team of 12-16 energetic dogs cover 1150 miles in 10-17 days? You bet they can! Not only that, but these teams cover the mileage over some of the harshest terrain and in the coldest temperatures that mother nature has to offer. It is a race of determination, willpower, startegy and strength--The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race!
The Iditarod starts in Anchorage, Alaska and ends in Nome, Alaska. What once used to be the only mode of transportation to areas inaccessible by automobile or airplane, has now become a test of human and canine abilities. The first Iditarod race was run in 1973. This Saturday, March 6th at 10:00 AM PT (2:00 PM ET) is the start of the 2010 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race!
If you'd like to learn more about the history of the Iditarod, the mushers, their dog teams and follow the race, please visit the official site: http://www.iditarod.com/
Happy Trails and Happy Tails!
