A BIG Thank You!

Please accept this personal thanks to all who supported my annual Flying Pig Marathon fundraiser.  Yes, I ran Flying Pig #12 on Sunday, May 2nd...in the rain!  If you were there, you know that it was successful regardless of the precipitation.  The Flying Pig Marathon is always a well organized event!

To date, over $2100 has been raised for the Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!  There are still donations rolling in weeks later.  If you would like to contribute, please visit this site still accepting donations:  www.firstgiving.com/billiemendoza

It's That Time of the Year

'Tis the season for festivals and events!  May is the month that everything starts happening and it can seem overwhelming trying to keep track of all the happenings around town.  Even more difficult, is deciding which events to attend.  To make things a little easier, Paw Joggers has added a calendar to our events page, making it easier to find and view pet-related events.  Please check the link often as we will be continuously updating the calendar.  http://www.pawjoggers.com/events

There are several events happening in the next few weeks that we'd like to highlight:

Dog Paddle
Sunday, May 23, 2010  10 AM - 5 PM
Morgan's Canoe, Ft. Ancient, Ohio

What are those doggone Morgan brothers up to now? You guessed it.... a new dog/owner event that should have everyone's tail waggin'! Morgan's teams up with CancerFree KIDS for this one-of-a-kind event.

Early Registration: $50 per canoe
Walk-Up Registration: $60 per canoe

Price includes a canoe for two adults, two children, a dog (for large dogs, one less person in canoe), and lunch for everyone! If you don't have a dog, just come for all the doggone fun!

The 3 mile canoe, kayak or raft trip ends at our beautiful Riverside Park and Campground. Take your 4 legged friend on a nice, 2.2 mile walk back to the livery alongside the pristine Little Miami River Bike Trail. Return transportation provided if needed. Once back at Morgan's, families and their dogs will be able to eat lunch, visit exhibitors,  and participate in fun activities including a "Dog Eat Dog" hotdog eating contest, a dog fashion show, a dog maze, an obstacle course, and a fetching contest! Win prizes too!

This is great family event for your children, grandchildren AND DOGS! Bring your family (including your dogs) for a fun morning walk at Sawyer Point and help SPCA Cincinnati's animals. Each registrant gets a free t-shirt! Browse our vendors and demonstrators in this beautiful park. Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!

The weather is getting warmer and that means making sure that you AND your pets are properly hydrated when enjoying outdoor activities.

Some Paw Joggers' tips when out playing, walking or running with your pets:

  • Use the water fountains in parks--they're usually turned on by April or May after the threat of cold weather snaps has passed. Many Cincinnati area parks have "doggie fountains". Carry a portable travel bowl to fill with water.  In a pinch or want to travel light?  Use a poo bag...a clean one of course!
  • There are many pet product H2O bottles that can be filled and dispensed through reservoirs for easier drinking like this one:

  • On a longer trek?  Carry a Camelbak or similar type product that can hold a larger supply of water, when fountains or other options aren't available.  You can dispense water from the pack into a container for your pet.  Colapsable travel bowls can easily fit into the extra pockets or space of the packs.  Camelbaks come in waist and backpack styles.  They have a range of other high-quality products too.  http://www.petedge.com/product/Guardian-Gear-Handi-Drink-Regular-17-oz/51312.uts

Be aware! Your pet can suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These conditions are very serious and could cause your pet to die. The signs of heat stress, which could include heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue.

If your pet does become overheated, you need to immediately lower his body temperature. Move your pet into the shade and apply cool (not cold) water over his body to gradually lower his core body temperature. Apply cold towels or ice packs to your pet's head, neck, and chest only. Let your pet drink small amounts of water or lick ice cubes. Most importantly, get him to a veterinarian immediately.

Have other hydration or warm-weather safety tips you'd like to share?  Please post on our FaceBook fan page or Tweet us!  Links to both at the bottom of this newsletter.
